EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Oct 8: It was expected that the outrageous statement of Omar Abdullah would provoke protests in Jammu and evoke favourable response from the Kashmiri separatists of all hues, including Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Sajjad Lone and Mehbooba Mufti, in fact, from all the Kashmiri leaders and certain elements in the Congress party at New Delhi like Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh and it actually happened.
The BJP and the JKNPP MLAs disrupted the proceeding in the assembly on Thursday and in the process some of them got injured. They not only demanded dismissal of the state government and prosecution of Omar Abdullah for what they called his anti-India outburst, but also decided to boycott the assembly session for the remaining period of the session. On the other hand, several Jammu-based organizations registered their protests against Omar Abdullah, burnt his effigies and demanded his immediate resignation. Thursday also witnessed in Jammu protest demonstrations and the police-crowd clashes leading to injuries to many, as also to the arrest of some of the protestors.
The police used excessive force on the peaceful demonstrators and it was on expected lines. After all, Jammu and Kashmir is that part of the country where anti-India elements, including dreaded militants, separatists and deadly stone-throwers are rewarded and the nationalists and integrationists are abused, humiliated, brutally tortured and dismissed as "rank communalists", "parochial", "reactionaries", "chauvinists" and so on. This is the nature of the Indian State. Hence, it should not surprise anyone in the country if the state police, under the baneful influence of the anti-India and pro-Pakistan and pro-separatist government, let looses a reign of senseless brutalities on the peaceful and nationalist demonstrators in Jammu. However, one thing is clear: The people of Jammu province would not let Omar Abdullah and his controversial government go scot-free this time because he has crossed all the lines. The coming days would surely witness more and more protests in Jammu, with the radicals among them demanding trifurcation of the state saying no truck with Kashmir and Kashmiri separatists.
As for the response of the Kashmiri separatists to what Omar Abdullah did on the floor of the assembly to create an impression that the accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India was conditional and as per (the non-existent) "agreement" reached between the (hidden) Kashmiri leaders and New Delhi, it was highly favorable. Reflecting on the statement of Omar Abdullah, the jubilant Syed Ali Shah Geelani described the statement of the Chief Minister as a "vindication" of his stand. He said: "The statement of Omar Abdullah is a success of our stand on Kashmir issue. The disputed nature of the State is such a truth that willingly or unwillingly even he had to admit it."
Sajjad Lone of the People's Conference said the same thing while participating in the Times Now's debate on the Omar's highly anti-India debate on Thursday. He did say that he didn't like Omar Abdullah and his government and his party, but, at the same time, appreciated him to the extent possible. He said what Omar Abdullah said was "historically correct'" and that the Government of India should act on what he said on the floor of the assembly because "he is an elected representative of the people of the state." He, like Geelani, was also jubilant and this was evident from his tone and tenor. Why not? After all, the Kashmiri separatists, like Geelani and Lone, have found in the person of the Chief Minister someone who as the Chief Minister of the state is speaking their language, hitting India below the belt and furthering the Pakistani interests; after all, they have found in the person of the Chief Minister someone who could facilitate the realization of their most cherished dream of dismembering India and de-linking Jammu and Kashmir from New Delhi and set up there "Nizam-e-Mustafa."
People's Democratic President Mehbooba Mufti, who otherwise do not see an eye to eye with Omar Abdullah and whose party has boycotted the assembly session, reportedly at the behest of Finance Minister Pranabh Mukharjee and Union Home Ministry, did criticize Omar Abdullah, saying the desperate and failed Chief Minister was enacting a drama by making such statements on the floor of the assembly in order to restore the ground he has lost by using brute force against the innocent civilians in Kashmir. In effect, she said Omar Abdullah was concealing his failures by deflecting the people's attention away from his failures on the administrative and other fronts. At the same time, she did appreciate the changed stance of Omar Abdullah in her own typical style. She told the Times Now: "If Omar Abdullah is committed to what he said on the floor of the assembly, he must give effect to that and prove that what he said on the floor of the assembly was not a drama." She, like Lone, also participated in the Times Now's debate.
The statements of Geelani, Lone and Mufti all indicate their support for the Omar Abdullah's patently anti-India and pro-Pakistan stand. That none of the remaining Kashmiri leaders, separatist or otherwise belonging to the Congress party, the CPI-M and similar other Kashmir-based outfits, has not criticized the erring Chief Minister so far is a proof that all of them share the communally motivated perception of Omar Abdullah. In other words, Kashmiri leaders operating from different platforms are one with Omar Abdullah as far as their hatred for India and love for Pakistan and Kashmiri Muslim identity politics is concerned. And, this is on the expected lines. It should make authorities in New Delhi sit up and revise their Kashmir policy and policy towards Omar Abdullah who is exploiting his official position to queer the Indian pitch in Kashmir.
Besides, the authorities in New Delhi have also to rein Divijay Singh. Remember Singh has given his unstinted support to Omar Abdullah. He has said there was nothing wrong in what Omar Abdullah said. "He is the Chief Minister of a State. He should not unnecessarily allow the message to go that he is weak and unnecessarily harassed and interfered with…In a federal system, the Chief Minister has his own views…There is an importance of the Chief Minister in a federal system. He has his own existence," Singh has said.
But more than that, the authorities in New Delhi need to tell the nation that there exists no "agreement" Omar Abdullah talked about in the assembly, that the accession of the state to India was unconditional and that it would not compromise the Indian stand on Jammu and Kashmir, come what may. New Delhi cannot afford a constitutional authority in the state who is subverting the very constitution and preaching sedition and secession. It is time for them to imitate Nehru and Indira Gandhi and act resolutely to defeat the likes of Omar Abdullah. (Concluded)
