LeT commander's chief aide held in Kishtwar | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 8: A top militant and chief aide to the pan-Islamic Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander was last night apprehended by security forces from Keshwan Sarwan, 40 km west of Kishtwar, along with grenades. He was about to hurl a grenade on the troops when valiant jawans overpowered him, police sources said. The arrest, which has been termed as a big catch in police and army circles, comes within a week of the complete wiping out of the HUJI outfit from Dachchan and the rescue of three newly recruited youth from HM outfit in the area. The apprehended LeT ultra was identified as Tariq Hussain Boro alias Abu Darda (22), son of Mohammad Boro of Naginigarh in Keshwan, Kishtwar. A close confidant of LeT commander Habib alias Salman, he was wrongly reported to have been killed by another LeT militant Sultan alias Noman in some local newspapers Thursday, the sources added. Acting on a tip-off about his presence at Keshwan Sarwan, jawans of police, army and CRPF launched an operation in the area Wednesday. Sources said after a two-day long relentless search operation, jawans spotted the militant yesterday at about 8 pm beneath a huge rock forming a cave. The jawans closed in on the cave and challenged him. Sources said the moment he saw the jawans, he tried to hurl a grenade on them. He was, however, overpowered by them before he could succeed, the sources added. Three handgrenades and a pouch were recovered from him. He was immediately whisked away to a nearby post and put to sustained interrogation. He had a gunbattle with security forces in the area on August 11 last. While his accomplice Shabir Bhatt alias Samra was killed, he had made good his escape, leaving behind his UBGL weapon. Sources said LeT, marginalised in Bonjwan area after the elimination of Ishaq Bhat alias Atik-led group, was in the process of revival under Salman in Keshwan. With Tariq's apprehension, the LeT cadres in Kishtwar district had suffered an irreparable loss. The outfit was regularly on the lookout for new recruits and had been maintaining a contact with its mentors across the border to disturb peace in the region, the sources added. Some vital inputs were expected from him about the presence and activities of other LeT militants in the area. Sources said there was already an intra-group rivalry in Kishtwar over the unethical distribution of hawala money by militant commander Habib alias Salman. |
