Local Cong leaders perturbed, in silent mode over fresh furore | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 8: Even as the Congress leaders in New Delhi have been trying to 'clarify and justify' Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's remarks in state Assembly, an uneasy calm continues to prevail in the local Congress leadership at all levels as their worries have only aggravated by the aggressive role of their rivals BJP both inside and outside the Assembly today. For the last two days the spokespersons of Congress, apparently as a part of damage control exercise have been trying to explain that Omar, with whose party they have alliance in J&K, did not mean anything that goes against the spirit of state's integration with the country. While some senior leaders tried to downplay on the first day saying as Chief Minister of a highly sensitive state enveloped with political disturbances, Omar only tried to address his constituency and the connotations can neither be interpreted as anti New Delhi posturing nor his leanings towards the separatists' ideology and agenda. However, perturbed by BJP backlash continuing for the last two days, the spokesperson in New Delhi, amid fresh furore , today maintained that the state is an integral part of India. The Congress leadership is even understood to have asked the alliance partner to exercise caution while speaking on such issues. This is quite obviously to save the local leadership of Congress in particular from facing any embarrassing and awkward position in Jammu where the party has its most of political constituencies. As always on such controversial issues related to Kashmir, while the silence of Kashmir based leaders and ministers of the Congress is explanatory, rather well understood, this fresh political furore has made the Jammu based leaders' position uncomfortable and uneasy. Sources within the local leadership said while there was some respite for them when BJP late last night announced it would not support the bandh call for today, things are far from being easy also in the wake of the fact that this time Panthers Party has also joined the chorus with BJP over Omar's remarks, which do not at all match the political grain in Jammu. The Congress is however, deriving relief from the fact that state Legislature is going to conclude for autumn session on Monday and the BJP as well as Panthers Party legislators will no more get to make a loud cry in context of Assembly proceedings. State Congress leadership is disturbed also in view of what they feel the NC has been given absolute laxity and freedom in matters of governance on all vital issues and on the contrary Congress , despite being as major alliance partner does not poke much unless the situation warrants. "We are certainly perturbed over the new developments, even though we know Omar might not have meant to offend New Delhi or party in particular……but we too have our own political constituencies where our rivals will rake up matters to hilt", said a senior Congress leader wishing anonymity. Now, at this point even though the leadership is trying to settle the dust of the political storm, the local leadership is apprehensive of anti Congress propaganda getting loud and intense when Durbar arrives here during the last week of October. Some senior leaders are learnt to have to convey their worries to the high command on what they feel the entire rank and file facing embarrassing situation over political matters of high sensitivity touched upon by none other than the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah himself. Even though that is meant to address his own political space. Sources said , though Congress leadership in Delhi has outwardly tried to support and downplay Omar remarks, the fresh row has only deepened the already divided view on continuation of present dispensation. However, the local leaders are convinced that high command and the Gandhis in particular are in no mood to allow any changes as of now, fresh tie up with PDP also being ruled out already, sources said adding that this speaks as to why spokesperson tried to justify CM's remarks, who consistently contending he was an elected CM and was in own right to say his was not a puppet government. It is pertinent to mention that Abdullah had on Wednesday said neither he nor his council of ministers were acting as puppets of the Centre. |
