ASCOMS observes world mental & No Tobacco Day | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, October 9: To observe the World Mental Health Day various activities were undertaken at ASCOMS through the department of Community Medicine. A health education programme was conducted by the Urban Health Centre, Chatha of the Community Medicine department at Govt. Higher Secondary School, Bhour Camp Kiran Bala, Lecturer of the department spoke on the topic of “Healthy Living” which is central to the maintenance of good Mental Health. Emphasis was laid on consumption of healthy balanced diet, avoidance of junk food, physical activity through participation in daily household activities, walking, running, cycling etc. for minimum of 3 days in a week, handling of stress through healthy entertainment like music and importance of techniques of yoga and meditation and development of positive outlook towards life. Bhavna Sahni, lecturer, department of community medicine made the students aware about the ill effects of smoking: Cancers, heart disease, tooth decay , mouth ulcers and peripheral vascular disease and narrated the alarming consequences of passive smoking. She also spoke on the short and long term adverse effects of consumption of alcohol. She underlined the importance of picking up healthy life style during the adolescent stage, a vulnerable period for experimenting with tobacco and alcohol. Earlier, an interactive session on issues relating to mental health of the elderly was held in the department of Community Medicine in which key note lecture was delivered by V.K Gandotra and Chander Mohan, professor psychiatry ASCOMS was the resource person. RN Dubey HOD, Community Medicine and K.K Pandita of General Medicine also participated along with other staff members. WMHD is observed on 10th October, every year to highlight then importance of Mental Health to human life.
