CM adapts Mufti Model for wooing angry Kashmiris
Omar the separatist!
10/9/2010 10:37:27 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Oct 9: The Chief Minister, it seems, has adapted what political circles call Mufti Model. The Mufti Model stresses need for speaking in a separatist tone when going gets tough and in mainstream tone when it gets easy. Omar has disappointed the opposition but has managed to dominate the political discourse in Kashmir, at least for the time being. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) patron, Mufti Muhammad Sayed has never won an election on his own till 2002. It was because of Dr Farooq Abdullah that he got elected to the Rajha Sabha in late 80s. But, in 2002 elections he created history by forcing National Conference to sit in the opposition. People close to PDP say, Mufti won the elections particularly in South Kashmir with tacit support of the separatists. It is believed that the Mufti was instrumental in wiping out Hizbul Mujahideen from South Kashmir. During 2008 agitation, the PDP became more separatist than the separatists. It talked about Kashmir resolution, self rule and abrogation of Indus Water Treaty. The Hurriyat Conference was pushed to the wall. Omar issued a series of statements since January this year. He accused the PDP of sponsoring and encouraging stone pelting. He also accused `agencies' of creating trouble in Kashmir. He was accused of failure to deliver. Even New Delhi talked about `trust deficit' and `governance deficit'. During the past four months, a harsh reality dawned on Omar Abdullah. ` You have to pursue a separatist agenda in Kashmir'. And that is exactly what Omar is doing now. He is the first Chief Minister who rejected totality of accession on the floor of the house. He even went to the extent of saying that Jammu Kashmir was an issue with international dimensions. "Jammu Kashmir has not merged into India. The accession is temporary and conditional", he said. When Bharataya Janata Party (BJP) and Panther's Party (PP) agitated the issue, the Law Minister responded by saying that the Chief Minister's statement was misinterpreted. But the government issued full page advertisements in local dailies titled `Omar's historic speech'. Omar wanted to give wide publicity to his `controversial' speech when he knew it was not received well by the opposition. The trick worked. Once again Hurriyat has been left wondering. Omar has said what most of the Hurriyat leaders cannot say for various reasons. The PDP has been also `stripped' of its seemingly separatist agenda. Omar, people believe has crossed all limits. PDP cannot even dream of going to that extent. The `historic' statement has triggered massive discussions across Kashmir. For the first time in the past four months, the National Conference workers could be seen with a pleasant smile on their lips. The focus has shifted on Omar for the time being. Political analysts believe the speech will go a long way in diluting the on-going agitation.
