Charges of corruption against Omar require parliamentary and not judicial scrutiny: PDP
10/10/2010 10:25:40 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu , October 10 :-The PDP leadership is of the view that the issue pertaining to the charges of corruption leveled against Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, should have been discussed on the floor of the state legislature instead of dragging the matter to the court.
Referring to the legal notice served to him and the party spokesman, Nayeem Akhtar, senior PDP leader and MLA, Nizam-ud-Din Bhat said that since it was a public interest matter the best forum for discussing and settling it could have been the Assembly. Bhat said that the issue did not require judicial scrutiny.
He said that had the Chief Minister been on a strong wicket he would have tabled the issue in the Assembly and instead he has opted for a legal battle.
Asked whether the PDP was ready to fight the legal battle, Bhat said that ”we have no other alternative. ""We have to defended our stand," he added.
In reply to a question he said that he would himself fight the case in the court and the Party would seek legal guidance and assistance from prominent advocates including the senior legal expert,Muzaffar Hussain Beig.
Asked whether the charges leveled against the Chief Minister could be established, Bhat said, let the court proceedings start and said, “We hope to expose the Government.
"At the same time,he added, that had the matter been raised in the Assembly, members belonging to other political parties too would have participated in the debate and shed light on the ongoing irregularities being committed by the ruling National Conference. He said it was unfortunate that the Chief Minister opted for taking a public interest issue to the court.
Bhat said the issue is not between the two individuals but between the ruling party and the opposition which required parliamentary scrutiny. Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, through his adviser, has sent a legal notice to Nizam-u-Din Bhat and Nayeem Akhtar for leveling "baseless, concocted, frivolous" charges against him in a bid to defame the image of Omar Abdullah.
The notice has called upon PDP members to publicly apologies and withdraws the allegations of corruption. The PDP members have charged Omar Abdullah with having received kickbacks to the tune of Rs.500 crores for allotment of the Rattle power project The members have accused him of having withdrawn Rs.26 crores from the Chief Minister's secretariat fund for his personal use.
