Shifting stands, brute force mark continued govt strategy: Mehbooba
10/10/2010 10:26:36 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, Oct 10: Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti has said the continued harassment of people and indiscriminate arrests of youth belie the false impression of a change of heart or policy on the part of government. “The government continues to rule through brute force, cracking down on youth and muzzling all voices of protest while trying to divert attention from atrocities by shifting of political stands in trademark National Conference style” she said in a statement.
Mehbooba said hundreds of innocent youth are lying in jails, interrogation centers and police stations without acknowledging their arrest.
Everyday dozens more are picked up from all corners of the valley by different agencies. She said PDP workers are being arrested without any reason except for their party affiliation and many of them have been booked under PSA. This she said was being done in spite of the statement of chief minister Omar Abdullah retracting his earlier claim that PDP workers were involved in stone pelting. The release of a few people which government touted as a gesture under its so called new strategy was actually in response to court directions
Referring to the killing last month of Bilal Ahmed Najar, a PDP activist in Anantnag, Mehbooba said the young man was fired at while participating in the funeral of another victim of police atrocities.
PDP chief said while on the one hand the government has started making noises about the genuineness of people’s sentiment on the other hand it has failed to exhibit any change of strategy on the ground.
Mehbooba said it was a travesty that the government which had ordered a judicial inquiry into the recent killings had refused to include all the incidents into the terms of the commission.
