| Sport Climbing: Rinchen of Leh is new women’s champion | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, October 10: Rinchen Angmo of Leh became the new women’s state champion in the 10th J&K State Sport Climbing Championship which went underway at the Sprawling Buds School, Chinore, here under the banner of J&K Mountaineering Association.
Shiny Khajuria and Sugandha Sharma, both of Jammu district, secured the second and third positions respectively.
In girls section, Roopali Sharma of Vivek Niketan Udhampur, Romika Thakur of Shastri Memorial Higher Secondary School, Patoli and Upasana Abrol of Shiksha Niketan, clinched first, second and third place respectively.
The sub-junior girls’ gold went to national climber, Bindia Sharma of National Academy in Udhampur. However, for the second place there was a keen contest between Sonali Sharma of Vivek Niketan, Udhampur, Mamta Devi of Amba Kids in Panthal and Shivani Thakarwal of Sprawling Buds wherein Sonali emerged victorious while Mamta had to content with third position.
Meanwhile, 12 climbers led by Rajiv Sharma, a national medalist of MNDP School, RS Pura have entered the final round of the boys’ category.
Over 250 climbers from various districts of the state are participating in the two-day championship which shall be the basis for selection of the state team for the forthcoming North Zone Sport Climbing Championship due to be held at Sainik School, Kunjpura, Karnal from October 30 to November two.
Earlier, the championship was inaugurated by Deputy Director Tourism, Ajay Sharma, who was chief guest. Speaking to the gathering he emphasized upon the importance of adventure games for the overall personality development of a person.
Prominent among others present on the occasion included Sanjeet Khajuria, Assistant Director, Doordarshan, Dr Sonam Angchuk, Assistant Director, Physical Education, University of Jammu, Ram Khajuria, secretary North Zone Sport Climbing Committee, Dr CK Khajuria, general secretary, Mountaineering Association of J&K and directors of the host school Rahul Sharma and Ramesh Khajuria as also Satish Bhan and Neha Dutta.
