Keeping a secret in Kashmir? | If New Delhi knows Kashmir, Islamabad is not ignorant? | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Oct 10: People across the globe guard their secrets and even succeed. But in contemporary Kashmir holding a secret is simply impossible. There are state actors and no-state actors in the field. All of them have connections and sources in NGOs, political parties and elsewhere. And with such a massive network operating in the strife torn Valley, everybody loses his secrets. A prominent person (a local news agency says Prithvi Raj Chauan) visited Hurriyat chairman, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq in recent past. Following the precedents, Mirwaiz did not disclose it and people, by and large remained unaware of the `important' development. But then happened the inevitable. A Pakistani newspaper broke the news and Mirwaiz had to admit it. The meeting lasted seven hours. The Mirwaiz while acknowledging the development said: "I am under house arrest and cannot stop people from coming to my house. I have never opposed dialogue." According to reports, the `prominent person' from the PMO visited the Hurriyat leader's residence late in the evening when all workers had left. Who, therefore, informed the Pakistani newspaper? The Srinagar based cleric must be wondering. When the meeting took place, only Mirwaiz's security and his family members were around! There is no denying the fact that New Delhi has sources everywhere in Kashmir. It gets a detailed report about various developments every evening. But, is Islamabad unaware of the developments in the Valley? If New Delhi knows every thing about Kashmir, Islamabad is not ignorant. The Pakistani newspaper has not just reported the news. It has conveyed a message to the separatists and New Delhi. "We know what is happening so be aware." It has also conveyed its displeasure over the development. Pakistan, it becomes clear, is not interested in any engagement between separatists and New Delhi for the time being. The Mirwaiz led Hurriyat almost broke when the Home Minister, P Chidambaram offered secret dialogue to the separatists last year. The general council of the conglomerate revolted and the senior leaders had to explain their position. Mirwaiz ruled out any connections with New Delhi during a press conference in March. "We are not in touch with the government of India", he said. The development has taken place at a time when New Delhi's interlocutors are about to visit Kashmir. Which way the wind blows in the coming days remains to be seen. |
