EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Oct 11: Senior leaders of the state unit of the Congress including some high profile ministers have approached Union Minister and in charge of party affairs in Jammu and Kashmir Prithviraj Chavan and sought his opinion over the situation which has arisen after the recent controversial statement of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the legislative assembly .
It needs to be mentioned here that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had criticized the role of the central government in handling security situation in Jammu and Kashmir. He had also questioned finality of the state's accession with India. A Congress minister seeking anonymity said “We talked to Chavan about the controversy which Omar's statement has raised. He advised us against taking any such step which could rupture the current political arrangement."
\Another minister said that Omar had his compulsions on dishing out a statement which ran counter to the 63-year old policy of the Congress on Kashmir. He said that Congress high command was aware of the embarrassment that had been caused to the state unit of the party by Omar’s statement.
He said that some senior AICC leaders besides Dr Farooq Abdullah were trying to convince Omar about the folly he had committed and they have suggested to him to concentrate on developmental activities which alone could lead to the dilution of the level of four-month long turmoil in Kashmir.
Other reports said that Omar has been advised to move out and around in the state along with the team of senior congress leaders and ministers in order to infuse confidence among the people in the government which has been shattered since the rise of violence from June 11.These reports said that once again Omar has been kept on the watch list by the AICC.
In case, there is improvement in his governance, there was no question of fiddling with the political arrangement. In case neither the governance improved nor the law and order the centre may have to make another arrangement.
