Omar to lie low till storm subsides
10/11/2010 9:46:58 PM
Sharing power, first with the PDP and later with he National Conference, seems to have resulted in the gradual erosion in the strength of the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in its stronghold of Jammu region. And the critics of the Congress have started accusing the Congress of lust for power on the plea that it has not come out of the coalition Government even after Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, not only fulminated against the Congress led UPA Government but questioned the finality of the state's accession with India. That the Congress image got affected during the fag end of its coalition with the PDP is no longer a secret. The PDP's stand on the diversion of land to the Amarnath Shrine Board had been instrumental in annoying even the staunch supporters of the Congress. The reulst was that the Congress won 17 seats in 2008 election against 20 in 2002 elections when about six more independent MLAs had joined the Congress. The public uproar in the
Jammu region against the revocation of the land diversion order is said to be one one of the main factors responsible for the BJP winning 11 seats when the same party had won one seat in the 2002 election. This way the loss of the Congress was the gain for the BJP.And during the last one week the leaders belonging to the state unit of the Congress feel highly perturbed over the stand Chief Minister had taken on the issue of state's accession with India. His st atement that Jammu and Kashmir had not merged with India but had acceded condionally ran counter to the Congress ideology. Not only this: Omar Abdullah's statement had hurt the sentiments of the people of majority of people of the Jammu region who have been espousing the cause of full integration of the state with the rest of the country.Yes,the leaders, including the ministers, belonging to the Congress have broached the issue with senior party functionaries in New Delhi. But finding that the party
high command is in favour of wait and watch policy the state leaders belonging to the Congress have decided to renew their links with their voters in their constituencies in a bid to assuage their ruffled feelings.Hitherto, their attempt has not yielded any positive results because some of the Congress supporters want the party to come out of tthe coalition Government if it wants to secure its future.Inside reports said that despite the fact that the Congress high command has opted for a wait and watch policy,as there is no suitable arrangement available in case Omar was told to quit at this juncture,it has taken a serious note of the fulminations of the Chief Minister against the centre and against the irrevocability of the state's accession with India.Reports indicated that the Union Minister for New and Renewable energy and President of the National Conference,Farooq Abdullah, has been asked to tame his
son.Farooq has started his damage control exercise after he received ample hints of centre's deep annoyance over the Chief Minister's statement on the floor of the Assembly.Reports said that Omar had decided to make an attempt at hijacking the agenda set by not only the PDP but by the separatists also by fulminating against the centre but had he confined his speech to the points that had been written on a piece of paper he would not have opened the lid of the Pandora's Box.He is said to have deviated from the written speech which had created the problem.Hence Omar has preferred to lie low till the storm subsides.
