Vijayaraje Scindia remembered on 92nd birth anniversary

Jammu, Oct 12: First National President of BJP Mahila Morcha Vijayaraje Scindia was today remembered on her 92nd birthday by Morcha leaders and activists in functions held at district levels in the state.
In Jammu, a colourful function was organised under the leadership of district president Anuradha Charak at Digiana.
The portrait of the great soul was garlanded besides distributing stationeries items and sweets among the poor children.
Mahila Morcha State Prabhari Suresh Jamwal, speaking on her life, said that Vijayaraje Scindia was born in 1919 at Sagar in present-day Madhya Pradesh, the eldest child of Thakur Mahendra Singh.
She was named Lekha Divyeshwari at birth. Already drawn towards austerity by the influence of her grandmother, Lekha gave up the use of foreign goods and fabrics.
BJP state secretary Mamta Singh, on this occasion said that although Vijayaraje Scindia was born in a royal family and had every comfort of life, she decided to enter the politics to serve the nation and the people. Vijayaraje was initiated into electoral politics in 1962 when she contested the Guna Lok Sabha seat in Madhya Pradesh on a Congress ticket. Five years later, she quit the Congress and joined the Hindu Nationalist Bharatiya Jan Sangh. She won the Kerera assembly seat as the party's candidate and plunged headlong into state politics. She went on to win seven consecutive parliamentary elections.
Mahila Morcha State General Secretary Priya Sethi said that it was due to her hard work, dedication and concern for a better India that took her to heights in the Indian politics. She came to the forefront of the BJP leadership in 1980 when she was made one of its vice-presidents. She played a key role in propagating the party's Ramjanmabhoomi agenda She remained a BJP vice-president until 1998 when she stepped down on health grounds and quit electoral politics. She died in January 2001.
Her ideas and principles shall remain a source of inspiration for the generations to come. She asked the morcha activists to learn about the life of this great daughter of India to be successful.
District President Anuradha Charak and other morcha leaders including Shakuntla Devi, Kiran Kumari and Babita Devi also spoke on the occasion.
