'Clamoring for pension’
58 years old bullet detected in ‘47 war hero’s chest
10/29/2006 11:10:45 PM

RAJOURI | OCT.29
The 75- year old Bachitter Singh of Dalhori village in district Rajouri is none else, but a war hero of 1947 who was injured while fighting with the enemies in Mendhar sector of Indo- Pak border in district Poonch. Singh, a solider of then Militia Force had got several bullet injuries while fighting with the enemies. Of the seven bullets pierced in his body, five bullets were removed at that time when he was airlifted to Delhi on a Decota Plane. Bachitter alleged that due to poor infrastructure and undeveloped medical science in early forties or otherwise due to inefficiency of the then doctors, one bullet remained in his fore arm, which was removed in 1960 after a gap of 13 years. More surprisingly even after removing the bullet from forearm in 1960, one is still in his chest, which has been detected in 2005.
Bachitter told this correspondent that the doctors removed five bullets during the wartime when he was admitted in army hospital Delhi. In the meanwhile he was receiving pension @ Rs.12 for month from 1949 to 1955. In 1955 another Army medical board declared him quite healthy and subsequently his pension was enhanced to Rs 15/- PM by the authorities as per the medical board opinion. He alleged that the army doctors did not properly check him. After moving from pillar to post during last 56 years, Bachiter approached to Batra Hospital at Delhi where the doctors told him that one bullet is still in his chest due to which he is suffering the heart problem.
Standing nearer to the grave, Bachitter has not lost his hope to get his pension case settled. Hoping to get his pension case settled, the war hero with the help of a stick appeared before the ‘Pension Adalat’ organized by 25 Infantry last year. After going through the documents produced by him, he is said to have been assured by the army authorities that his case will be settled at the earliest but regrettably nothing has happened during the last one year. Whether his dream will ever be fulfilled, only the time will tell.
While going through the relevant documents produced by the war hero, PCDA Accounts Officer Ashwini Trisal has expressed his surprise as to why the pension case has not settled during last 58 years.
If this type of a treatment is meted out to a war hero who spent his youthful days in fighting the enemies, what could be the fate of the commoners? The non-disbursement of pension to the hapless war hero is very much astonishing and needed to be looked into by those responsible for release of the same. On what account his hard won pension has been withheld needs to be answered and in the meantime the bullet lying in his chest taken care of so that it may not further endanger his life.
