E-governance project: 8 yrs, and work still going on
10/12/2010 10:25:40 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Oct 12: DESPITE the tall claims of the state government of speedy work, the e-governance project is yet to see the light of the day.
The aim to launch the project was to compute and maintain all the files in computers to make the work more simple and transparent. The project was to be completed within two years but it has been now more than 8 years and the work is still on.
Ironically, the state has spent over Rs 7 cr so far and now the project has become an white elephant for the government. In 2002 when this project was to be launched, the estimated cost of the project had been worked out as approximately Rs 13 cr which by now had become exactly double.
``The project was launched to get rid off the files and make work precise, people-friendly and more informative in different government departments. However, the project fails to serve the purpose as it is yet to be completed, said one of the official on the conditions of anonymity
The e-governance project was given to Jammu and Kashmir Sectt Information Management Systems.
Sources said that the State government had given the project to Tata Consultancy without assessing the authencity of software.. However, JKSIMS failed to complete the project within stipulated time. Till now Rs 5.67 cr had been given to the consultancy services. Sources said that GAD had also come out with posts of system executives and assistant programmers for the same project but till now the same had not been filled.
