Students protest ‘anti-Jammu’ policies of centre | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Oct 12: A violent clash broke out between police and students in Government MAM PG College when the latter tried to block University road after boycotting classes in protest against the alleged anti-Jammu policies of the Centre. The situation turned tense when police resorted to cane charge to disperse the protestors while the agitating students also pelted stones alleging high-handedness on part of the police. In the melee, some students also received minor injuries. The students boycotted classes over the issues including delay in appointment of Vice Chancellor for Central University Jammu, announcement of eight-point formula for Kashmir, demand for compensation to the tune of Rs 5 lakh to those killed in Amarnath land agitation in 2008, removal of CM for his “anti-national” remarks in Legislative Assembly, denial of scholarships to SC/ ST students and government’s discriminatory’ attitude towards Jammu. The protests have been launched on the call of Jammu Joint Students’ Federation (JJSF). Sources said the students continued their protests on second day at Government MAM PG College Jammu and boycotted their classes. The protestors while raising anti-UPA government slogans alleged the Centre has played a negative role and has kept mass in dark in the case of appointment of Vice Chancellor for Central University, Jammu. They warned that students of Jammu region in particular and people in general are not going to tolerate any such acts of the Centre and the state governments which are allegedly against the interest of nationalist forces here. An eyewitness told that students tried to block the University road that forced the Police personnel to resort to mild cane charge while the students, in retaliation, pelted stones on Police. Situation remained tense in the college for about ten minutes. Though minor scuffle between students and police was also witnessed in GGM Science College, yet major clash was averted after senior police intervened into the matter. The students objected the entry of police into the college. Addressing the gathering, state vice president JJSF, Partap Singh Jamwal lambasted the state government as well as Centre for their lackadaisical attitude in appointing the Vice Chancellor of Central University Jammu. Students of GDC Paloura and Government SPMR College of Commerce also boycotted their classes and raised anti-government slogans. Meanwhile, state president JJSF, Pushvinder Singh Manhas appealed the students of Jammu region not to relax the ongoing agitation as it is beginning of a decisive struggle.
