Lop-sided approach: Dehlvi needs to be hailed and educated about J&K | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 12: Islamic scholar and chairman of Anjuman Minhaj-e-Rasool Maulana Sayeed Athar Hussain Dehlvi (S), Qazi-e-Shahar (Uttarakhand) and Maulana Zahid Raza Rizwi and Maulana Mohammed Usman Owaisi from Ajmer Sharief, who talked to media persons here in Jammu yesterday, need to be hailed and questioned. They need to be hailed because they dismissed the demand for independence put forth by those who contest the accession of the state to India and suggested that the "issue of Kashmir should be resolved within the framework of Indian Constitution" because Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India. Their suggestion could be described as a major snub to those who still believe in the two-nation theory or who seek another communal partition of the country. They should also be hailed for their demand seeking a "white paper" on "Agra Summit" and the "funds spent in J&K in the past 20 years." People must know as to what went wrong at Agra and where has the Indian tax-payers' money, that was pumped into Kashmir during the past two decades for people's welfare, has gone. They should also be appreciated for their stand on strike calendars being issued at regular intervals by Syed Ali Shah Geelani. They said that the people of Kashmir are fed up with these strike calendars. Besides, Dehlvi opined, "Islam is not safe in Pakistan." However, these Islamic scholars and clerics did spring a big surprise when they asserted that the "people of the Valley are angry with the country" and demanded withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). They not only demanded withdrawal of the AFSPA from Kashmir but also from militant and separatist-infested North Eastern states of the country, thus creating a doubt in the minds of the people about their real intentions. They crossed all the lines when they asked the authorities in New Delhi to "mollify" the "angry" people of Kashmir "rather than using repressive force" and referred to the recent 113 killings in Kashmir virtually accusing the security forces of unleashing a reign of terror in the Kashmir Valley. They said: The need of the time "is not the use of brute force on the people of Kashmir", but to conciliate them through confidence-building measures. So much so, they accused the Government of India of adopting a double-yardstick while dealing with the protestors in Rajasthan and Kashmir. In Rajasthan, they said, the authorities did not use brute force against the Gujjar protestors (read those demanding reservation under the Indian Constitution), but in Kashmir, the authorities applied a different yardstick in order to deal with the protestors (read those demanding Pakistan and independence from India) and asked: "if the those who were killed in Kashmir were not the Indian nationals?" Maulana Dehlvi crossed another line when he asserted that the "issue of the Jammu and Kashmir is not a religious issue", that "it was a political issue", that it "should be resolved politically" and that nobody should treat it as a religious issue." He raked up several other controversial issues, including the need of tripartite talks, talks with China on the Kashmir issue, human rights situation in Kashmir, compensation to those in Kashmir who got injured during their clashes with the security forces and compensation to the family members of the slain stone-throwers and militants, failure of BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley to meet the Kashmiri separatists during the all-party parliamentary delegation's visit to Kashmir, unemployment and under-development in the Valley and so on. Notwithstanding their suggestion regarding the resolution of the Kashmir issue within the framework of the Indian constitution, these Muslim scholars and clerics expressed views which, if accepted, would mean that those who planned to bring off a coup against India and fought pitched battles with the security forces in June this year and thereafter innocent and that it was the security forces and the Indian state which are the real culprits. They overlooked the fact that the security forces acted only when the situation had gone out of control as well as when their very life and limb were in danger. They didn't say even once that those who deliberately attacked the security forces and the state police and burnt down the public and private property had committed a mistake. On the contrary, they denounced the security forces. By giving a clean chit to the stone-throwers and subversives in Kashmir, these Islamic scholars and clerics virtually sided with them and indirectly supported their separatist cause. They also exposed themselves and their approach towards what has been going on in the Kashmir Valley since months when they, like the Kashmiri separatists and anti-India human rights activists, rake up the issue of "human rights" and demanded withdrawal of the anti-terror laws from the militant and separatist-infested Kashmir Valley. They forgot that militants and separatists, plus the unruly elements, have no human rights. They are the same people who have killed and butchered thousands of innocents and forced Kashmiri Hindus and other non-Muslims to quit Kashmir. They forgot that those who revolt against the institution of the state are always dealt with sternly. They cannot be treated with kid -gloves. (To be concluded) |
