Do Mufti's subscribe to Omar's views? | PDP's meaningful silence | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 12: Omar Abdullah's controversial speech in the Legislative Assembly last week has evoked a response from one and all including the separatists. However, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), contrary to expectations has maintained what political circles call `meaningful' silence. But can PDP afford to remain silent for long? The Chief Minister caused a stir in the sub-continent by his fiery speech and scored many a point over his rivals in the separatist as well as in mainstream camps. He won severe criticism as well. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Panther's Party (PP) in particular sought an apology from Omar. They even urged the Speaker to expunge some sentences from Omar's speech which they thought had the potential to jeopardize the unity and integrity of India. Disappointed, rather angered by "attitude of the Chief Minister and the Speaker", they threatened state wide agitation. The separatist camp also responded immediately. Most of them welcomed the statement and urged the Chief Minister to stay firm on his `stand'. However, Syed Ali Geelani said the speech was scripted in New Delhi to `sabotage' the on-going movement. The PDP has always given a tough time to the National Conference (NC). When it sought autonomy, PDP came out with its Self Rule proposal. NC formed the special operations group (SOG) and the PDP disbanded it (though on papers only). NC extended Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) and PDP directed the police not invoke the new law. NC decided against construction of a fly-over in Srinagar but PDP got it constructed in record time. NC said Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) will remain in operation for the time being but PDP sought a special session of the Legislative Assembly to discuss the legislation. The verbal dual between Omar and Mehbooba assumed wider dimensions with the latter using words like autocrat and killer for the former. But Mehbooba fell short of words when Omar delivered his `historic speech'. It seems the PDP spokesman, known for his writing skills, is not in town. Or, are there other reasons? If its past record is any indicator then PDP cannot afford to oppose Omar this time. He has ventured into their domain this time. Has Mehbooba been defeated in his own game? But what options does PDP have? If Omar's statement is endorsed, New Delhi will take it to task. And, if PDP maintains its silence or opposes the Chief Minister's views, it will lose many a supporter in the separatist camp. It is between devil and deep sea situation for PDP!
