Kanwar continues to hog limelight

JAMMU, OCT 13: Kanwar Iqbal from Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu again made a mark in the Rangoli Competition, held under the “Display your Talent” 2010-11 and bagged the top position in said Inter-Collegiate Contest, being organized by the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu.
Shivali Rani from the Department of Environmental Sciences and Bharti Devi from the Department of Zoology, University of Jammu, had to settle for the Second and third place, respectively. Whereas the Certificates of Merit, were awarded to Preeti Sharma from Government Women College (GWC) Parade, Shafali Gupta from The Business School and Arushi Kartik from The Law School of University of Jammu, Sakshi Sharma from Government Degree College, Reasi and Surbhi Andotra from GWC Kathua.
Dr. Shubhra Kapoor, Sandhra Malhotra and Richa Mahajan were the adjudicators in the said competition. Teacher Incharge Dr. Smridhi Arora apprised the participants about the rules and regulations of the event and supervised the competition. Participants used different mediums such as Coloured Saw Dust, Pulses, Rice & Gulaal etc. and created the images of Ganesha, Goddess Kali, Navratri Dandia, Peacock and Swastik. Etc. The glowing lights of earthen lamps and candles adorned the Rangolies.
It may be mentioned here that this art is known differently in various regions such as Mandna, Alpana, Alekhan, Kolam and Rangoli. Rangoli is mostly prepared during the festivals, at the marriage ceremonies and places of worship. In Duggar region it is known as CHAUK POORNA. When the bride is to enter the house of in laws, the entrance is beautifully decorated with traditional designs and footmarks.
Sylvia.A. Sahni, was the Chief Guest on this occasion. She appreciated the talent of the young participants. Chairperson Prof. Versha Mehta, Co-Chairman, Campus Cultural Committee Prof. Jasbir Singh, Director of Sports and Physical Education Prof. Dhian Bhau and Dean Students Welfare DSW) Prof. N.K.Tripathi were also present on this occasion.
