Agitating SC/ST students thrashed, 3 held
Delay in releasing scholarships

JAMMU, Oct 14: Angry protests of hundreds of students of Government MAM College belonging to Schedule Castes/Schedule Tribe community against non payment of SC/ST scholarship today entered third day.
In the wake noisy protests, police resorted to use of force on the protesting students and also arrested three of them who were actually leading the protesters. Arrested leaders included MAM college unit president of All J&K SC/ST Students Federation Choudhary Talib Hussain, President MAM college unit of Progressive Students Association (PSA) Rajinder and Ramjee Sharma.
Students alleged that the police party led by SHO Gandhi Nagar Rafiq Manhas thrashed the student leaders at the behest of College Principal Prof Ajit Angral. They also alleged that the leaders were severely beaten up by the police. It is pertinent to mention here that the about 200 students belonging to SC/ST community are yet to be distributed pending scholarships for this year.
Progressive Students Association (PSA) today protested and torched an effigy of Principal MAM College in the campus of Jammu University. Ladakhi students belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC) community also accompanied the protesters. However, reports from outskirts informed that students of Government Degree College (GDC) Kathua, Government Degree College (GDC) R.S.Pura, and Government Degree College (GDC) Hiranagar led by activists of Progressive Students Association also protested and boycotted classes in support of the protesting students of MAM College.
He condemned lathicharge on the peaceful protesting students. Arrested student leaders were released later with intervention of other student leaders when the reports last came in. Students vowed to continue protest demonstrations in other colleges of region as well. All Jammu and Kashmir SC/ST student federation organised a press conference and demanded constituting an enquiry committee into the incident of lathicharge and delay in disbursement in the SC/ST scholarship.
