10/14/2010 10:37:07 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Rajouri, Oct 14: Thousands of Special Police Officers commonly known as SPOs have turned disappointed after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah refused to enhance their wages as promised earlier. Most of them are planning to quit the service which may be big problem for government if they did so .
Wishing not to be named , a group of SPOs told this correspondent that the government has deceived them after utilising their services against militants in the state of Jammu and Kashmir for years together. " They have exposed us . Not only we , even our families are at danger , but instead of regularising and rewarding us the government has refused to enhance our daily wages", said one of them, adding that they have no option but to quit . An other SPO said that on one hand the government was talking to provide jobs to the unemployed youth of the state but at the same time the government was forcing most of the youth to shun the path of mainstream and indulge in violence. He further said that a labourer gets Rs 300 per day for working only eight ours in a day but they were being paid Rs one hundred for 24 hours work . "Out of this about 50% is the expenses during duty time which includes diet and other related items required", he added .
It is pertinent to mention here that few days ago in a statement Chief Minister Omer Abdullah refused to enhance he wages of the SPOs working with police force and other security forces in the state. The SPOs were recruited in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in mid nineties with an aim to fight the militants. These local boys fought bravely and large number of them were killed during the encounters with militants. In the initiation, the SOPs were given Rs 1500 per month, however, it was doubled by Ghulam Nabi Azad government in 2007. And they were promised to enhance more with the passage of time.
