| Serpents in the grass | | EDITORIAL... | | As the beans are being spilled more and more moles in every field of country's administration and security apparatus are coming to light, presenting a very alarming scenario about the country's security. While in the case of Jammu and Kashmir the situation appears to be back to square as it existed over a decade and half ago, as described by Jagmohan, the former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, in his book 'My freezing turbulence'. He graphically mentioned in minute detail the existence of serpents in the grass at every level in the police force as well as in other wings of the administration. The presence of these agents of secessionist terrorists at places where they could acquire information of counter operations to be launched by the security forces, leaked these to the perpetrators of terrorism and thus preempted every action of the agencies operating to curb the militancy and control the highly precarious conditions prevailing at that time. After coming to light of agents of enemy having infiltrated every field of administration and security apparatus, a thorough screening was undergone then and it was believed that all the undesirable elements have been weeded out from the vital places and their capacity to harm the interest of the country and return of peace in the state has been highly blunted. It is either that we became complacent after that or that the task was left half done and many spies of the enemy continue to remain posted at vital places, lying low for the time being, to become active when the need arises. The arrest of three junior level officials in the IRP in Jammu and Kashmir who leaked some information to the master minds in the Lashker-e-Toiba terrorist outfit and of similar moles in the defence forces or para military forces is a matter of serious concern. The same cannot be brushed aside and taken leniently, pleading that the places and the level at which these officials were incumbent, they could not get any important information to the enemies, to be much benefited and much harming the country is a highly dangerous attitude. The presence of the mole in the PMO, as disclosed by former External Affair Minister Jaswant Singh in his book, has been confirmed by various hands, with circumstantial evidence. Thus it is now more than an established fact that there has been infiltration of the agents of foreign powers, at various levels in country's administration and the security apparatus. While this can be no sane person's case that recruitment in army and police forces should be denied to the members of any particular community, since any such action will lead to further alienation in the members of that community, whose isolation will prove a time bomb for the nation, there is dire need for thorough screening and eternal vigilance about the links of personnel in our forces, if any, developed at any stage with the trouble makers. Our defence forces, para-military forces and police forces of all the states should be insolated from political influence and it should be ensured that all the personnel in these forces are loyal to the country, more than to their respective faiths and communities. Further a strict vigil should be kept over all the institutions which indoctrinate and brain wash the youth, inculcating in them the spirit of serving their creed over and above the discharge of their duty towards their country and the nation. There should be a strict law against preaching of sedation, directly or indirectly in the guise of serving the interests of one's faith. Further any exercise, as the one sought to be done by Sachar Commission of head counting in the security forces on communal lines, must be abandoned forthright.
