CU Jammu all set to get local VC | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 14: Bowing before pressure of Jammuites for appointment of a local as Vice-Chancellor (VC) of proposed Central University of Jammu, Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry has prepared a fresh list of candidates for the purpose. According to highly placed sources, HRD Ministry has taken opinion of two members of parliament from Jammu region and higher education Minister for the finalization of the fresh list of the candidates to be proposed to the President for final selection out of those. In this list, five candidates have been short listed and all from Jammu region. Those who have been included in the panel are Prof Rajiv Gupta (Director Colleges, JU), Prof BPS Sehgal (Law Deptt, JU), Prof GS Sambyal (former JU Registrar), Masud Choudhary (BGSBU Vice Chancellor) and Prof Keshaw Sharma (Management Deppt, JU). Now, President has to select the candidate out of these. With this, the people of Jammu will now get the Vice Chancellor of their own choice as they were pushing the case for appointment of local as Vice Chancellor of this proposed Central University. It is pertinent to mention that previously the selection committee had forwarded a list of five candidates that included all non-locals. Former JU Vice Chancellor Prof Amitabh Mattoo was one among those. It is pertinent to mention here that in year 2008, the Prime Minister had announced Central University in Jammu region. But after the long agitation the central government announced two central universities one in Jammu and the other in Kashmir region. Interestingly the Central University in Kashmir region is working under good infrastructure, but in Jammu the post of Vice Chancellor is still a political issue. And appointment could not been made on the post for the obvious reasons. When contacted, Minister of Higher Education Abdul Gani Malik stated that he has no knowledge about the selection process of Vice Chancellor. However, he said that work of central university would start only after the appointment of Vice-Chancellor. |
