10/16/2010 12:03:25 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Oct 15: Unlike others, a Jammu doctor remained a silent supporter of the top Indian boxers since last over a decade, devoting him self for the well being of the country’s top pugilists.
This state doctor is none else but younger brother of former Indian handball captain and Deputy Superintendent of J&K Police, Ranjit Singh.
Never wanted to be highlighted, a low profile Dr Karanjeet Singh’s story was unfolded by Ranjit Singh during a chat with Sports & Allied News regarding India’s performance in the just concluded Commonwealth Games.
Dr Karanjeet Singh, a sports medicine specialist from the state, was team consultant with Indian boxers who took part in the Commonwealth Games. “For the last two years, since 2008, he remained with the Indian boxers as team consultant,” disclosed Ranjit.
After graduating from Government Medical College Jammu, he did specialization in Sports Medicine from National Institute of Sports (NIS) Patiala.
During his studies at Patiala, he got the opportunity to work with Indian Hockey, Weightlifting, Judo, Athletics and Boxing teams.
Being from sports family and younger brother of a renowned handball player, Dr Karanjeet joined Indian Boxing Federation in 2000, as member of medical commission for Indian Boxing Federation.
During his long association with Indian Boxing team, he got opportunity to work with coaches like G S Sandhu and M Veenu to serve top Indian boxers from Ali Quamar to Olympic and world championship medalist Vijender Singh, Dinesh Kumar, Suranjoy Singh and many more.
His first tour with Indian boxing team was in Cuba in 2003 and then for World Championship in China in 2005 as team doctor.
Known for his hard work and knowledge in sports medicine Dr Karanjeet was called by Indian Boxing Federation to serve high profile Indian Boxers in December 2008.
After joining Indian team preparing for CWG 2010 since 2008 he was member of team for World Cup in Moscow December 2008, Asian Championship China 2009, World Championship Milan Italy September 2009, Commonwealth championship New Delhi March 2010 and President Cup Kazakhstan.
Later, interacting via email with SAN, Dr Karanjeet made more disclosers about his exact nature of job.

Role to Play

Since boxing is injury prone sports, I take care of the injuries of the boxers (like Vijender, Suranjoy, Dinesh Nanao Singh, Jai Bhagwan), their active treatment and rehabilitation for early return to the ring. Once injury occurs it pushes the athlete back from other opponents so I take care during his treatment his training should not hampered.
It is weight category sports, so I guide them for proper diet and food supplements for maintaining weight and early recovery. Giving strength after the weight loss is very important so that when boxers enter the ring he should be full of energy and for this proper knowledge of supplements is very important.
Today when WADA is very strict for doping it’s better to give dope free medicine which helps them to give recovery and proper stamina and strength for the competition.
