Do not feed monkeys on highway: Wild Life Department
Travelers infringe department’s warning

JAMMU, Oct 15: Animals are liked by all but it does not mean that people should put their lives in danger. Visitors from different parts of country and state feed monkeys on Jammu-Srinagar national highway without caring that their fun will hurt them badly. Tourists feed monkeys with chanas, bread, fruits and with other eatables things. As a result many monkeys were injured while crossing the road for eating things which were lying on the roads even many of them were died and some of them were lost their limbs.
Many visitors or travelers left over the food which becomes a death trap for the monkeys around the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. Despite written warnings of the Wildlife department on the route at various places, ‘Do not feed monkeys’ but visitors violating the instructions and still feed them.
Travelers on the highway keep feeding the monkeys with the left over food which was kept with them and some of them even bring special eatables for monkeys, resulting in overrunning of these creatures by speeding vehicles while they collect the food stuff thrown of them.
Wildlife department warned that violators can be booked under Section 51 of J&K Wildlife Protection Act amendment 2002 and the detention could range from six months to seven years depending upon the gravity of the crime. Department had already identified some feeding points for the monkeys and that the people should strictly adhere to feeding the monkeys only in those zones on the highway.
Aarav Singh said that the monkeys not only for the visitors but also for all the people who have been years-old playing creatures just because they ape humans. "People are not concerned whether they live or die. They just want to have fun with them," he added.
Rahul student said that why people feed monkeys when the wildlife department put hoardings on the highway and wrote “do not feed monkeys on highway”, he added.
Mohit traveler on this road said that he was surprised to see people feed monkeys not on the road side but in the middle of the road where accidents are more.
Gopal Sharma a local said that department should check on those points where monkey feeding is prohibited and penalized those who infringe the warning which were written by the department.
