Revocation of SMS ban demanded on festive occasion | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 15: On one hand, when the state government in coordination with the Government of India has announced a number of Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) to inculcate a sense of normalisation in the trouble torn state of Jammu and Kashmir, but on the other hand the ban on SMS services in the state is intact despite remarkable improvement in the ground situation. Various Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) included release of stone pelting youth, removal of some bunkers from the valley, compensation to the victims of firing by the security forces who were killed or injured, visit of All Party Delegation led by Union Home Minister P Chidambaram and recent appointment of three Interlocutors by the Union Home Ministry. But there are no talks on revoking of ban on the SMS services. The ban was imposed by the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) on the recommendations of the state government on the pretext that the stone pelters were getting strengthened by the use of this technique. It was also believed that the services were being used to spread rumours and gossip in the name of news. Interestingly, the purpose was not served for which the ban was imposed on the SMS services in the state. Incidents of violence and killing of youth continued as such. Only the genuine subscribers are harassed only on this act of the state government. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu Zone Ashok Gupta, when contacted for his take on the issue over phone, expressed helplessness over the matter. The home ministry had late last year banned pre-paid mobile services for more than two-and-a-half months (from November 1, 2009 to January 21, 2010,) in view of security concerns. The ban was also imposed on SMS ban on April 16, 2010, but was revoked within hours of its imposition. It is pertinent to mention here that in our state, there are more than 30 lakhs subscribers of mobile phones (both prepaid and post paid) of various companies including BSNL, Airtel, Aircel, Vodaphone, Tata Indicom, and Reliance. And the market is expanding rapidly. As the festival season is going on, there is heavy demand from cross sections of the society that the ban should be revoked immediately. SMS plays an important role in exchanging greeting on the occasion of the festivals besides a cost effective mean of communication. SMSs can contact with thousand of contacts at a time that too in a short span of time.
