Hoarding, price rice takes toll on fasting people | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 15: The festive season is going on these days, but the people of the state particularly in Jammu region are reeling under acute inflation and hoarding as the items used for consumption during fasting days are getting out of their reach. Festival season has started with the advent of Navratras these days. People belonging to Hindu religion used to observe fasting on these days and used to take boiled Potatoes, Kuttu and Sanghara flour. But the prices of these essential items are sky rocketed and making it difficult for poor families to observe fasting. In vegetable market Nai Basti, Pahari Patatoes is being sold at Rs 100 for 4 Kilograms these days. The other varieties of potato also reached to Rs 80 to Rs 90 for 5 kilograms. Vegetable sellers are anticipating more price rise of potatoes in the coming days. A vegetable vender said that as compared to the last year, potatoes are not coming in required quantity in the markets of Jammu. Most of these commodities are imported from Punjab and Kashmir. Like potato, Kuttu and Sanghara flour are also heavily demanded and consumed during fasts. Ashok Kumar, a vendor at Rampura a said that there is price hike in these two items from Rs 20 to 30 as compared to last year’s prices. The price of Kuttu flour was Rs 45.50 per kilogram in the previous year which now has reached to Rs 70 per Kilogram. Last year, the prices of Sanghara flour were Rs 60 per kilogram which now has come up with Rs 90 per kilogram. Sarva rice is also not behind the race. It is being sold at Rs 70 per kilogram. Also hoarding of these commodities besides other commodities these days is also making the situation worse.
