BSF to acquire anti-fog image enhancers for better visibility | Pak raises bunkers, towers on IB in violation of rules: IG BSF | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Oct 15: Foggy weather in winters has always been a great challenge for troops in detecting infiltration bids from across the borders. To overcome this problem, BSF would be acquiring state-of-the-art anti-fog equipment this winter. While the new equipment would solve to a large extent the poor-visibility problem due to thick fog, another problem had started bothering BSF -- its activities were under constant watch at two places on the International Border (IB) where the Pak Rangers had constructed bunkers and towers in violation of rules. "We are conducting trial of anti-fog equipment to counter poor visibility -- one the biggest challenges before us in winters -- to check infiltration attempts from across the IB," BSF IG S Chatopadhay told reporters on the sidelines of a function here today. "The fog is the biggest challenge during winter season. It is the most testing and critical period in view of very-very poor visibility along the border. But we are going for anti-fog devices in this regard," he added. He said the aim was to provide troops better visibility and these equipments were image enhancers. Trials of some anti-fog equipment was on, he said and added the trials were being conducted by the top scientists of Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO), he informed. "It is testing and critical period as there is increase in intrusions, infiltration, ceasefire violations and firing incidents from across the border," Chatopadhay said. There were 26 such incidents in 2009, but till July this year alone, there had been 36 such cases. "This shows an increase in such incidents," he said and added, "We have lodged protests with our counterparts in this regard." "We have also shown them the proof of Rocket Projectile Grenades (RPGs), which were fired on our troops from across the border during intrusions and firing incidents," he said. The IGP said the Rangers had promised BSF that they would keep a check and stop such incidents in future. "There was a positive response from the Rangers. They have responded quickly and effectively to our complaints and are undertaking patrolling on the same pattern which we have adopted on this side," he said, adding that dense bushes on the other side, which were used by militants for hiding, had been cleared by them on the BSF's request. On modernisation of the force, he said BSF was getting hi-tech security equipment and had been using hand-held thermal imagers, surveillance equipment, bullet and IED proof vehicles, besides vision devices. There are 400 militants waiting to infiltrate into the country. The winter strategy is being put in place for intense patrolling of the border areas and deployment of more men on the identified infiltration routes. To a question, Chatopadhay said that Pakistan had constructed two bunkers and two towers on the IB in violation of rules and that had been brought to their notice. |
