Jammu, Oct 15: Leh district is all set to hold elections for 24 segments of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh tomorrow. The district administration has deployed additional security forces stationed at all 224 polling booths across the district for holding free and fair elections.
Official sources said over 69,000 voters will exercise their franchise tomorrow and will decide the fate of 67 candidates. Congress party has fielded its candidates including a woman on all 24 seats while the BJP candidates are in fray from 21 segments.
Besides, four candidates of People's Democratic Party (PDP) and 18 independents are also in fray for the elections. Two candidates from the Congress have already been elected uncontested. The counting on all seats will be held on October 21.
Sources maintained, "It is for fourth times when elections to LAHDC, Leh are being conducted. The elections are crucial this year because people of Leh still are struggling to cope with the aftermath of massive cloudburst in Leh, claiming the lives of over 200 and rendering thousands homeless."
Sources said the administration has identified 27 hypersensitive and 54 sensitive polling stations in all the five blocks of the district viz Durbok, Nyoma, Khaltsi, Nubra and Leh.
The Additional Deputy Commissioner, Leh, Mohd Hanief, who is the Election Officer for the Council polls, told said adequate security measures have been placed for holding free and fair elections.
The Election Officer said, "We have stepped up security on all polling booths. The additional personnel of JKP, CRPF and ITBP have been airlifted to Leh from Jammu and Srinagar for election duty and they would assist the district police in ensuring smooth polling.
Sources said the administration has also provided satellite phones and radio sets to polling parties of remote areas.
Sources said the polls have become interesting after the merger of top leadership of the Ladakh Union Territory Front (LUTF) including its 16 sitting Councillors and Chief Executive Councillor with the Bharatiya Janata Party. The campaigning for polls, which started on September 22, had come to an end at 4:30 p.m on October 14.
