Money handed over to property dealer for land acquisition | Defence colony in dock | | Early Times Report JAMMU Oct, 16: Proposed “Defence Colony’ by Sainik Cooperative House Building Society (SCHBS) has landed in controversy as allegations have started surfacing much before the inception of the project. According to sources, draft of proposed colony has been made in the haste but as far as development on this project is concerned, nothing has been achieved. A new revelation in this regard has given another dimension to this project. Reportedly SCHBS management had withdrawn Rs. 1 crore out of money collected from applicants of proposed colony. Amount was handed over to city based property dealer for acquisition of land for proposed colony, sources added. They revealed thatwithdrawal was affected on July 17, 2010 in Channi Himmat branch of Punjab National Bank through cheque No. 395593 dated July 15, 2010. The same amount was offered to the said property dealer as advance payment for the land. But, no guarantee was obtained from the property dealer in lieu of the advance payment. And it still not clear as to where that amount have gone which is public money and needed to be accounted properly. It is pertinent to mention here that the proposed Defence colony is to come up on 5000 kanals of land at Thandi Khui near Vijaypur as claimed by SCHBS. About 6,000 applicants had reportedly applied for the plots. But situation on the ground is that the society does not have the required land for the colony. Reportedly, SCHBS has so far collected a sum to the tune of Rs. 18 crores from the interested people. Applicants alleged that management of Cooperative House Building society has played a fraud as there was no land available for such colony and over 200 of them have taken their amount back. Sources further said that an enquiry was also ordered through Registrar Cooperatives in this regard. And, the report in this regard is being hushed. They added that withdrawn public money amount has been misappropriated. When contacted, Chairman SCHBS Col (Retd.) K.S.Padwal for his comment and more information on the issue he straight forwardly refused. Similarly, Registrar Cooperatives M.Awas also did the same and preferred silence over the matter for the reason best known to them.
