Amid lackluster scenario 66% electorate vote for new body | LAHDC polls | | KUNAL SHRIVATSA & M RAMZAN KHAN EARLY TIMES REPORT LEH /JAMMU, Oct 16: Amidst tight security and above average voter turn out, Leh district of Ladkah region witnessed by and large peaceful polling to the 4th general elections to the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) today. The polling, which commenced in the morning, began on a dull note as most of the polling stations in Leh wore a deserted look but later in the day it picked momentum. Around 66 percent of about 73003 voters spreading across 224 polling stations reportedly used their right to franchise for electing a new body for LAHDC. Out of total 224 polling booths, 26 were earmarked as hyper sensitive while 64 of them were categorized as sensitive. The district administration has made elaborate arrangements to avoid any untoward incident since the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) had apprehended large-scale rigging in the elections for LAHDC. However, there were reports of stray incidents of clashes and bogus voting in two poling stations including Sanker and Nimo, where highest turnout of 80 percent electorates was reported. This time around the enthusiasm among the electorates for electing their representatives for LAHDC was less as compared to previous years. With shops and business remained shut, the usual hustle-bustle in the markets was missing as if ‘curfew’ has been imposed. The offices, schools and colleges also remained closed to facilitate people to come in large for casting their votes. Except for the presence of polling agents nearby polling booths and workers of different political outfits, the general public preferred to remain inside their households. The commoners came out only to cast their votes. LAHDC has a strength of 30 representatives with four of the members are nominated. The polls, however, were held for 24 seats only as two of the Congress candidates including Rigzin Spalder and Sonam Dorjey have already been declared elected unopposed with no one putting an electoral battle against them. Congress and BJP have been contesting on 24 seats each while Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) contested four seats only besides few independents are also in the fray. According to early trends available with Early Times, it is a neck to neck fight between two arch rivals- Congress and BJP. While Congress is likely to win 11 to 12 seats, the BJP’s candidates could emerge victorious on 9 to 10 seats. Some independent contestant could spoil the party of both these national parties as they are expected to win few seats. The results of the polls to Council seats will be declared on October 26.
