Wajahat in his true colours, wants Delhi to grant autonomous status to J&K | NEWS ANALYSIS -- I | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 16: “Will simply withdrawing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act and conceding the demand of the state assembly of 2002 for greater autonomy bring closure (read end of unrest in Kashmir)? Although it might be reasonably argued that these are components of what might be arrived at a compromise, equally true is the fact that these issues have little to do with the present demands. Their induction into the present debate was at best a red herring. And as for the demand for autonomy, the last thing that the agitating youth have been demanding is a return of their state government to the powers enjoyed by it in 1953, the gist of the autonomy demand of the National Conference…The lull – and it must be recognized as no more than that – must be used to bring the people of the state, and the Valley in particular, towards participation in governance…As for the Union of India, the answer is incredibly simple – allow to the Kashmiris the same respect and dignity that is considered a right by every Indian citizen…” Who wrote all this? Wajahat Habibullah. And what he wrote was what he has believes in. He was a votary of two-nation theory in the past and he continues to preach the same even today. Habibullah is now no more the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) of India. H is a freeman and free-lancer now. Even when he was CIC, he used to advocate controversial and communally motivated views on J&K in order to help the cause of the Kashmiri separatists in general and the protagonists of autonomous J&K in particular. He is one person who had the audacity of holding high official position and simultaneously pouring contempt on India, on the Indian laws, on the Indian Army and making common cause with those in Kashmir attacking New Delhi on the issue of human rights. He is also the one person who has consistently tried to persuade the powers-that-be in New Delhi, including the Prime Minister, to divide Jammu province on communal lines. The memory of what he told the Working Group on Centre-State Relations, headed by Justice Sageer Ahmad, just a couple of years ago is still fresh in our minds. He had suggestion division of Jammu and Ladakh on communal lines – something that is an integral part of the National Conference’s sinister game plan. As mentioned, Habibullah is a freeman now. He has ample time at his disposal to pen down his pro-autonomy and unsettling views. He is an addition to the long list of those like Kuldip Nayar, B G Verghese, Rajinder Sachhar, Praful Bidwai, Madhu Kishwar, Harish Khare, Amitabh Mattoo, Malini Parthasarthy, Vidya Subramanium, Kamal Mitra Chenoy, to mention only, who have already been carrying on a relentless campaign in order to put pressure on New Delhi so that it declares J&K as an autonomous state; so that the people of Jammu and Ladakh and other patriotic sections of society in the state become the slaves of autonomous Kashmir. Habibullah, it may be mentioned, relinquished his constitutional office on September 30. He took less than two weeks to come out with a highly controversial essay on Jammu and Kashmir, entitled “Kashmir: endgame or violent rebirth?” It appeared only on Friday in a leading national English language daily. His essay is nothing but a scathing attack on the Army and the security forces. It is also an essay that has nothing to tell about what the hooligans, stone-throwers, separatists and the ISI agents have been doing in Kashmir since June this year to make their “Go India Go Back” movement a grand success. In fact, it is an essay that represents the viewpoint of the subversives and communal elements in Kashmir and paints the Indian institutions black and barbarous. Most significantly, Habibullah’s essay on Kashmir is a concerted move on his part to influence the opinion of the interlocutors, who were appointed only a couple of days ago by the Government of India to suggest ways and means leading to the resolution of the “Kashmir issue.” He has nothing to do with the people of Jammu and Ladakh and the problems they have been facing since 1947. They appear to him to be mere subjects, third grade subjects and slaves. Similarly, he has no word of sympathy for the displaced community of Kashmiri Hindus, the persecuted Sikh community and nearly 10 lakh refugees, all victims of fanaticism and terrorism, who have been languishing in Jammu since decades. His single-point agenda is, like Mohammad Ali Jinnah, to help the Kashmiri separatists achieve what they want to achieve. (To be concluded)
