Vehicles increasing, Jammu faces shortage of parking space | | | NAGENDER JAMWAL Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 17: With vehicle number increasing at an alarming pace, Jammu city’s traffic woes due to almost non-existent parking spaces are likely to get compounded in the days ahead. As per the version of city administrator, every year there is increase in the number of vehicles whether it is two-wheeler or four-wheeler. In city area, road are small with encroachments making even the movement of pedestrians impossible. It is impossible to get vacant parking space in the entire old Jammu city. Shopkeepers have encroached roads with their saleable commodities. Besides, parking of two-wheelers on the road side is also unfortunate. When the anti-encroachment drive was started, within days Jammu city’s interior roads gave an entirely new look. Roads became wider and one found driving both pleasant and smooth. But within days of the drive being called off, roads returned to their original size. Now, again the common man is suffering due to parking problems. Government had made some parking lots for the public but these parking areas are not sufficient for the vehicles. These parking lots do not have space for parking of the vehicles. When the night falls, one can easily see residents of the city and adjoining streets parking their vehicles in the lanes and by-lanes on both sides of the road. In case of emergency, ambulances and fire extinguishers vehicles find it extremely tiring to drive on the roads in the old city. Prithvi Raj, local resident of city said that last year, a fire broke out in his adjoining shop and when he contacted fire fighting department, fire extinguishers took around one hour to reach the spot because of wrong parking of vehicles in the city. Then the fire was controlled by locals themselves, he added. Atul Sharma, a student said that government should construct triple story parking area where one can park vehicles easily. Mukesh, an employee said that government should widen old city roads like other states since it would ease the traffic chaos in the city. Their should be ban on the entry for vehicles from both the sides in the old markets of Jammu city, said Mohan Lal retired govt. employee. He added that on festival seasons and on durbar move, it would be nearly impossible to drive on the old city roads. Even at night, vehicles can be seen parked everywhere in city and these create problems for heavy vehicles to move from one place to another, said Pankaj Koul.
