Budhal operation called off; 2 Pak ultras killed, 2 escape | | | JAMMU: The Budhal operation was called off with the troops Sunday morning retrieving the bodies of two slain Pak militants of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), while the other two, who were stated to be holed up in the area, remained untraced. The operation, which began Tuesday last in the thickly forested Kagora hills of Budhal, finally ended today with troops of 60 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) returning to their barracks after six days of relentless searches. The troops, displaying high degree of professionalism and patience, did not show any haste to kill the four odd LeT militants after they were cordoned in the treacherous mountain passes six days back. Two of them were, however, killed in an exchange of fire, that continued from morning to evening yesterday, while two remained trapped. Police sources said after the killing of two militants, troops did not lift their cordon Saturday night. However, when they combed the woods in the morning, they could not find any trace of the remaining two militants, the sources added. The bodies of two militants were retrieved Sunday morning from the Andar Achni dhok in which the militants were hiding. They were identified on the basis of documents recovered from them as LeT commander Abu Hamza and his associate Abu Shamas, both Pakistanis. Apart from two AKs, their four magazines and 45 rounds, a satellite phone was also recovered from them. Andar Achni dhok falls close to Shopian border of Kashmir. The possibility of the militants having come to this side from Shopian was also not ruled out, the sources added. |
