10/18/2010 12:30:05 AM
Early Times report
Jammu, Oct 17: In a bid to streamline the rising traffic chaos, Jammu and Kashmir IGP (Traffic) Hemant Kumar Lohia said the signal lights will be installed on roads of twin capital cities of the state by the coming months of December-January.
''Following rising traffic problem in twin regions of the state, it has been decided to install the signal lights to streamline the system and hopefully it will be done by the months of December-January,'' the IGP told reporters while addressing his maiden press conference here this morning.
Lohia said the issue was taken up with the authorities concerned and the project has been okayed while the work would soon start on it.
''The Srinagar Municipal Corporation has provided no object certificate (NOC) to the traffic department whereas in another couple of days, Jammu Municipal Corporation will too finalise the things following which installation of traffic signals will begin,'' the IGP added.
Lohia further said in yet another initiative, the traffic department has also introduced a new system of compounding the violators in which he has to deposit the penalty amount in the bank than on the spot to the officer concerned.
''The violators can collect the documents after depositing the amount and showing the receipt to the officer in-charge,'' he added.
The IGP further said an idea of blog, SMS service and website would also be launched soon for the commuters facing any hardships in dealing with the traffic department.
''The department has also planned to teach concepts of driving at a training school, which is soon going to be established in this winter capital,'' the IGP said.
When asked about what action has been initiated against a BJP MLA who allegedly beat a traffic cop at Samba few days back, IGP said that the matter has been brought to the notice of Chief Minister and Director General of Police for necessary action.
