Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 17: Jealous of his growing popularity, Geelani's opponents accuse him of initiating Track II diplomacy. According to them, Geelani was the first to initiate bilateral dialogue and that too at track II level with Ram Jethmalani and Wajahat Habibullah.
Similar allegations were leveled by former Huriyat (M) chairman, Moulana Abbas Ansari in March this year. Ansari said the un-divided Hurriyat Conference authorized Syed Ali Geelani to hold talks with Wajahat Habibullaha and Ram Jethmalani. Geelani, therefore, became the first person to open channels of track II diplomacy. He also became the first person to recognize such exercises", he said.
Some leaders in the Mirwaiz Hurriyat are not happy over Geelani's growing popularity. Geelani has shot into prominence over the past few years and calls the shots in contemporary Kashmir.
People close to Geelani have rejected these allegations as baseless and aimed at maligning the image of the senior leader. But, according to informed sources, the allegations are not baseless.
Some moderate separatist leaders say if people perceived bilateral talks as a means to solve the problem in past why should they oppose the exercise now?
Geelani's it may be mentioned rejected Home Minister's secret dialogue offer last year. His stand caused a stir in the other faction of the Hurriyat Conference. A leader preferring anonymity said: "A dialogue is always secret. If we divulge the details of a dialogue process, the whole exercise will fail."
But Geelani's supporters hold a contrary view. "The dialogue process must be meaningful and result oriented. It must also be transparent leaving no scope for the leaders to go for a sell out", they said.
When asked about Geelani's engagement with Ram Jethmalaini's Kashmir Committee, they say `times have changed'. "It has dawned on us that bilateral dialogue serves no purpose."
Criticism notwithstanding Geelani has not only gained popularity, he has become increasingly relevant in contemporary Kashmir. This has been acknowledged by the government of India and the state government. The Chief Minister pointed it out in his speech in the Legislative assembly.
