Early Times report
JAMMU, Oct 17: Though the appointment of three interlocutors by centre on Kashmir to resolve the crisis in strife torn Valley has not been welcomed by the separatists and other mainstream political parties in state yet a cross section of people in Kashmir is of the opinion that the interlocutors can perform a good role in resolving the prevailing crisis provided they meet the cross section of people in the state and seek their viewpoints. According to some intellectuals in Kashmir pleading in Kashmir anonymity, the appointment of interlocutors by union government can go a long way in resolving the prevailing crisis in Kashmir provided they seek the independent opinion from the people of Valley by meeting the cross section of people instead of selected groups.
These intellectuals are of the opinion that like in past the Indian Delegations have met selected people and Henchmen of politicians and they presented a distorted picture of the prevailing crisis before them. This way the Central representatives could not grasp the real picture of the prevailing crisis in Kashmir, they added.
They said in case the government of India is really interested in resolving the prevailing crisis in strife-torn Kashmir Valley and restoration of peace there, it should give a freehand to interlocutors in seeking public opinion on prevailing crisis in Valley.
These interlocutors besides separatists and the mainstream politicians should also meet well meaning people in Valley including intellectuals, people from art and culture, business community representatives, orchardists, lawyers and representatives agriculturists to elicite their free opinion on the issue. the interlocutors should refrain from meeting the selective groups of politicians, who only present the one sided version of the problem, they added.
Maintaining that present crisis in Kashmir is neither a war for Independence nor merger with Pakistan but an outcome of tussle for gaining supremacy over each other by the two factions of Hurriyat one led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani and another by Moulvi Umar Farooq. Besides it is also a tussle between opposition PDP and the ruling NC who want to outwit each other to gain supremacy, they added.
In case the Union Government interlocutors succeed in understanding the problem by meeting cross section of people in the State, including the displaced Pandits-Pok and west Pak refugees as well as people from Jammu and Ladakh regions there is every hope that they can draw a conclusion and suggest the remedial measures for resolving the crisis once and for all, they said.
