BJP to start ‘accession day’ celebrations from Srinagar on Oct 20
10/18/2010 10:46:22 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Oct 18: In the backdrop of political row over the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah’s remarks in legislative assembly, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to launch ‘Accession Day’ celebration programmes from Srinagar on October 20.
The programme is to be inaugurated by party’s national general secretary and former Union Minister, Vijay Goel.
Announcing this in a press conference here on Monday, the BJP state president, Shamsher Singh Manhas claimed the Jammu and Kashmir acceded to the Indian Union on October 26, 1947 when Maharaja Hari Singh signed an Instrument of Accession like other princely states. “It is due to the timely and wise decision of the then Maharaja that
we are enjoying democracy. Hence, like other festivals, the Accession Day is also a day to be celebrated with great pomp and show,” he said.
The BJP state chief said the recent remarks of the Chief Minister over the issue of accession demand that Omar Abdullah should be sacked as his continuance would only endanger the unity and integrity of the State.
Manhas said the BJP has chalked out a number of programmes to be organised throughout the state with a motive to reach the masses and educate them of the historical facts of accession and anti-national utterances by the state Chief Minister.
“The BJP would organize first programme at Srinagar on October 20, which will be attended by senior leaders from the centre as well as state, besides massive participation of local general public. The party leaders and activists would also participate in October 24 programme to be held at Parade being organised by some non-political
organization,” he said.
He further said, “On October 26, the BJP and Yuva Morcha activists would organise programmes in each district throughout the state. This day will be celebrated like Diwali festival by illuminating buildings and firing of crackers etc. The party will organise more programmes in more than 200 places from October 27 to November 2.” He also expressed resentment over appointment of interlocutors from outside the state saying that they lack basic knowledge about the men and maters and other aspects of Jammu and Kashmir.
