Sham for promoting rural, conventional sports | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 18: Minister for Health, Sham Lal Sharma, today said that the coalition government was implementing several innovative measures for massive development of sports infrastructure in the state with special emphasize on giving a big fillip to rural sports. This was stated by the Minister while presenting cash prize to the winner of a wrestling competition organised by Dangal Committee Akhnoor in collaboration with J&K Indian Style Wrestling Association at Akhnoor. Wrestler Abdul Gani from Punjab thrashed wrestler from Punjab Som Vir in the first bout. Gani, who was the winner, who was the winner, was given Rs.18,000 from the Minister while the looser, Vir, was given Rs 13,000. In this championship, wrestlers from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pardesh and J&K besides wrestlers from BSF and JK Police participated in the 100 matches held during the event. Meanwhile, in the second bout Rehmat Ali from Doda won the match and received a cash prize of Rs 15,000 while the loser, Gurtej from Khana Punjab was given Rs 10,000 by the Contractor Association, Akhnoor. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister highlighted various reformative steps being taken up by the government in making available all necessary sports facilities to the players of the state especially those living in rural and far off pockets. He said that the government is also initiating various measures to promote rural conventional sports of the state. Referring to Rs 6 crore sports stadium being constructed at Palam, Akhnoor, the Minister said that this stadium will ensure all latest sports services to the sports men of the area. Earlier, the Minister visited Bagh-e-Bahu and inspected the construction of parks and other ongoing development works there. Director, horticulture, K. K. Sharma and other senior officers accompanied the Minister. The Minister instructed the concerned officers to redouble their efforts for proper upkeep of the prestigious parks of Bagh-e-Bahu which are being visited by lakhs of domestic and foreign tourists.
