10/19/2010 12:00:50 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
kishtwar, Oct 18: A brawl over the "ownership rights" of a pasture situated on the outskirts of far-off Polar hamlet in Kishtwar left four women wounded on Sunday evening. The injured -- Fatima Bi, Rajni Devi, Bimla Devi and Basanti - were admitted to the Kishtwar district hospital.
The pasture has a cremation ground in its vicinity. While some Gujjar families used the pasture to graze their cattle, Hindus cut wood from there to burn their dead. Police sources said Hindus claimed that pasture was part of thecremation ground, but Gujjars said it belonged to them as they had been grazing their cattle on the land for the past several years. The matter was pending with the revenue authorities for its peaceful settlement, the sources added.
However, there was a verbal duel between the women of two sides followed by a fight with sticks last evening.Sources said in the fight, Fatima, Rajni, Bimla and Basanti sustained injuries. All were undergoing treatment at the district hospital in Kishtwar.
Sources said both the sides had lodged FIR against each other at the Paderna police post under whose jurisdiction Polar falls. To defuse the tension, police and revenue authorities led by a naib-tehsildar visited Polar this morning and had meetings with both the sides.
Sources said the representatives of two sides would tomorrow had a meeting tomorrow with deputy commissioner, Kishtwar, to settle the dispute. "There had been made no arrest in the case as efforts are being made for the amicable settlement of the dispute," the sources added.
