No 'movement forward' from separatists makes formula stagnant | 8-point package for Kashmir | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 18: In what appears to be the 'see-saw' of Kashmir politics, the Centre's high ride has hung in the air as it is yet to be reciprocated to some height, if not in full wave length by the separatist camp which looks adamant on sticking to 'ground level'. There is virtually no movement forward from their side ever since the Centre announced its 8 point formula followed swiftly by the appointment of three interlocutors few days back. In the game of passing ball in terms of initiating steps, the Centre took the one and threw it in the court of separatists mainly, besides those who matter in Kashmir polity, by sticking to its commitment of engaging interlocutors. This is the biggest and first major step in the 8-point formula that has been envisaged to diffuse unrest in Valley and bring back some amount of normalcy on all fronts. While all, including separatists waited and watched with caution what this formula had in store, particularly in terms of appointment of interlocutors, this was replaced by complete chill when the names were announced. They rejected the step downright and even termed it as futile move in respect of re starting almost dead or frozen dialogue process in the state. In other words they did not only disapprove the names of the interlocutors as insignificant but also sought to dismiss the entire process terming it as only delaying tactics from addressing the core issue. The disapproval and dismissal almost from all quarters has now stagnated the air and atmosphere which was stirred in positive direction by New Delhi with some hope of positive response, in the wake of miseries inflicted on people. But that was not to be. The ball is still in the court of separatists. And New Delhi is perhaps counting on some nod from the separatist leadership. While reticence and reluctance on part of separatists is well understood on every move initiated by New Delhi but they have to come to some 'meeting point' in order to enable the former to roll out other steps. That separatists rejected the interlocutors merely for its composition is a naïve thinking. They would have done so even if the composition was of politicians or heavyweights, as some of them have desired. Their dilemma and predicament is on a different front- the mentors from across the border, for whom this exercise is unacceptable for obvious reasons.
But in the scenario that is fast leaping towards normalcy, it appears imperative for the separatists to budge a little from rigidity. This would give some respite to people who are waiting anxiously for other steps to be followed after interlocutors. While interlocutors will resume their work anytime now, in order to allow government to fulfil its commitment of following other steps in the 8 point formula, some response from separatists is crucial. If one takes a look at the fast changing public mood, particularly the dictates that were ignored today for continuance of strike, it is high time for the separatists to show some 'courage' and make a movement forward. To sum up, it is time for them to become 'leaders' not 'followers' of the dictates from across the border. |
