Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 18: Omar led coalition government has curbed civil rights more than the separatists since June this year. While the government imposed curfew for 53 days in four months since June 7 to end of September, the Valley observed strike in response to the calls of separatists for equal number of days in three months starting June 7.
A Press trust of India (PTI) report quoting the Chief Minister says Kashmir valley has witnessed 53 days of shutdown in the four months from June to September this year.Omar stated this in response to a question by Muhammad Yusuf Teng in the Legislative Council recently.
The Chief Minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, gave a detailed list of shutdowns and their impact on political, social and economic condition of the state.
The process started on June 7 when both factions of the Hurriyat Conference called for a total strike in Kashmir to protest Prime Minister, Man Mohan Singh's visit to the Valley.
The strikes became a regular feature following killing of an 11th standard student, Tufail Ahmad Matoo of Saida Kadal, Srinagar. Tufail was hit by a smoke shell, which his parents believe was fired at him with the intention of killing him. The police registered an FIR after violent demonstrations which crippled life across Kashmir for several days.
Surprisingly Omar did not say how curfew restrictions had adversely affected social life in the valley.
Omar did not say for how many days the Valley remained under curfew since June 7.
However, data furnished by Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS) says the government imposed curfew restrictions in Kashmir for 53 days from June 7 to August 26.
The JKCCS is in the process of collecting data for September. In order to keep the people indoors, shoot at sight orders remained in force on August 3, 4, 5 and 6. During the past four months, Omar achieved the distinction of breaking Ghulam Muhammad Shah's record.
Shah placed down town under curfew for 45 days in 1984 after leading a blood less coup against former Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah.
