No Ban, J&K planning to export Basmati | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 19: Contrary to news reports of government intending to impose ban on Basmati, agriculture ministry is exploring options of exporting it. Sources in the agriculture ministry said that ministry is worried over the way the Basmati produced in the state has no international market. Talking to news agencies, Minister for Agriculture Ghulam Hassan Mir said that government has no plan of imposing ban on export of Basmati. “We are trying to explore international market for famed Basmati of R.S.Pura. Large quantities of Basmati are being exported from India which allows government to increase foreign exchange reserves,” said Mir. In reply to a question, Mir said that as far as aroma of Basmati produced in Jammu and Kashmir is concerned, it is of international standard but size of the grain has prevented Basmati dealers from exporting the produce to foreign countries. Explaining it, he said that size of the grain was small when compared to the size of Basmati grain exported to foreign countries from other Indian states. Mir said that he had taken up the matter with government of India. “We have requested the union agriculture ministry to explore export market for famed Basmati rice on the basis of its aroma adding that there was need for central Government agencies to get Jammu Basmati to get introduced in the markets of some foreign countries. In the meantime, Minister has asked scientists of the two Agricultural universities to intensify their research programme so that new varieties of Basmati rice were evolved which had longer size than the stuff being produced at present. When reminded that dealers and middlemen besides traders reap benefits from the export of Basmati while the producers and farmers get raw deal, agriculture ministry officials said that problem could be solved by farmers themselves. They explained that if the farmers formed a cooperative society, they would be able to export their produce to the markets outside the state. Official sources said that Basmati export would result in steep rise in the prices in the local markets. However, they said that it is a universal phenomenon adding that the government does not want the farmers and the dealers to suffer losses because of meager price in the local markets when the cost of production had gone up during the last one decade. However, various social organisations in Jammu and Kashmir have demanded that the government should impose limits to the export of Basmati so that its prices within the state do not escalate.
