Diksha Salgotra retains women’s title in badminton

JAMMU, Oct 20: Diksha Salgotra today retained the women’s singles championship trophy outplaying Vandhana in straight sets 21-16, 21-14 in the final of the ongoing 37th State Badminton Championships at Indoor Complex, MA Stadium, here.
Earlier, in the semi-finals, Diksha defeated Prabhjot in easy straight sets 21-03, 21-10 while Vandhana beat Akanksha 2-1 (18-21, 21-17, 21-14).
Likewise Diksha, Akanksha too won the junior girls singles title for the second consecutive time beating Deepakshi 21-17 21-08. In the semi-finals, played late last evening, Akanksha beat Prabhjot in straight equal sets 21-15, 21-15. In other semi-final, Deepakshi trounced Diksha Mahajan 2-1 (21-17, 18-21, 21-10).
The sub-junior girls’ singles title went to Diksha Mahajan, who beat Tanjula Shair 16-21, 23-21, 21-08 in the final. In sub-junior girls’ doubles, Tanjula and Gagandeep defeated the pair of Diksha Mahajan and Akanksha.
In sub-junior boys doubles final, Santul and Nafeez registered a straight but close sets win over Abhay and Ayush beating latter 21-18 22-20. The mini boys single final won by Nalin Pandoh beating D S Shivam 2-1 (21-14, 13-21, 10-21).
Meanwhile, in men’s singles event, the siblings of Vikram Saini and Vipul Saini have qualified for the semi-finals. In the quarterfinals, played today, Vikram beat Vasu Bhagat 21-14, 19-21, 21-19 while Vipul trounced Amit 21-04, 21-07.
Earlier, the first round of the men’s singles event witnessed a number of walkovers after participants from outside districts failed to report.
