Omar shown black flag at public rally, Cong not invited at 'official function' | 'Outburst' of Accession remark | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Oct 20: After his bold statement on Accession of state on the floor of Assembly early this month, it was the first time Chief Minister Omar Abdullah faced wrath of those who opposed his views in Jammu publicly. In an apparently National Conference arranged 'show' in a village in Vijaypur the ruling party leaders would not have imagined or desired this to happen. Embarrassing as it came, Omar was shown black flag from a protestor in the rally who even dared to shout at him, saying "go Omar ..go back….".The protestor was dragged by the personnel of CM's security and handed over to local Police authorities. It was not a political rally nor a public meeting of any political party, instead a government function to mark laying of foundation stone of a model village in Abtal, in Vijaypur constituency which was won by NC during 2008 Assembly elections. However, no Congress minister, not even local leaders of Congress party, coalition government's major ally, were invited in the function. Apart from Chief Minister , Ali Mohammad Sagar in capacity of Rural Development Minister and SS Salathia, Industries minister and MLA of Vijaypur ,both NC ministers were seen on the 'show'. Everything went on smoothly until the Chief minister rose to make his speech only to face black flag waved by a person from the audience. He even shouted slogans and making this loud, he said this action was to register protest against what Chief Minister stated in the Assembly about Accession of J&K with India. As he tried to approach the dias, he was dragged by the police. Not to get unnerved by this 'unexpected gesture', the Chief Minister went on with his speech, condemning it as a result of 'frustration' of some people who want to give different colour and connotation to what he said about Accession of state. " Majority of the people have understood the contours of my statement and what I intended to say……..they have understood it well and appreciated….it is only few who are contesting this perspective", the Chief Minister maintained. It may be mentioned that Omar Abdullah in his speech on the concluding day of Autumn session of Assembly asserted that 'J&K had acceded to India but not merged with it'. This created a furore in political circles, particularly from Jammu based parties, BJP and Panthers Party having remained in the forefront to register strong protest. In fact the man who waved black flag in today's rally at Abtal village has been identified as a functionary of Panthers Party, who is in police custody for this action.Interestingly, the CM mistook the man as one from saffron brigade which appeared from his immediate remarks, even though he did not name any party. "It is these people who are creating wedges and dividing masses on religious lines…….", Omar is said to have stated immediately after the man was whisked away . However, he changed his tone and tenor swiftly when he got this indication that the person belonged to Panthers Party. This was not the only trouble NC faced during this show. Congress, particularly those who belong to this area were sore over the fact that they were not invited on the occasion which was an official function. "It would have been better had they invited Congress leaders as well…..we would have enabled them to organized show in a much better way……though an official function it eventually turned out to be NC political rally in which people to joined the party as well….", said Manjit Singh, ex MLA and leader of Congress party. "By keeping only their own people board, they (NC), has given a wrong message……..", he said while ruing complete absence of Congress from the function. |
