GCET students call off strike

JAMMU, Oct 21: Students of GCET College today called off strike after the assurance from principal and higher authorities that all their problems will be addressed at the earliest.
Earlier in the morning, students under the banner of Jammu Joint Students’ Federation (JJSF) staged protest over the shortage of faculty in the college.
The students gathered at GCET, Old Campus and raised slogans against college administration. The protest was led by Partap Singh Jamwal, State Vice President, JJSF.
The angry students marched towards the principal office and took the gherao. The Principal, later, contacted the higher authorities Dr Sham Lal Gupta, Director Higher Education.
Later, on the directions of higher authorities, principal called a meeting at the conference hall with the JJSF leaders and GCET students. The JJSF leaders present in the meeting included Partap Singh Jamwal, Mohd. Arif, Abhay Sharma, Sanjay Sharma and GCET students.
The college authorities present included Principal and HOD of GCET. In the meeting, the college authorities agreed all the demands of students such as the sports week will be organised at the New Campus in November, He also ordered the HOD of Electrical Deptt. to make all necessary arrangements. He said that library facility for the first year/electrical/mechanical engineering has been set up in the mechanical block whereas library facility for computer/civil/electronics and communications is functioning in Civil Engineering Block. He also agreed for immediate medical faculty for students. He also said that education tour, cultural activities will be held in coming days, meeting for new canteen will be held tomorrow, after making some arrangements the hostel facility should also be given within fifteen days, the transport problems should be solved with in days. He said the proposal for arrangement of two buses has already been sent to the higher authorities .

Later, Jamwal gave an ultimatum of fifteen days to resolve all the issues concerning students and assured there will be no protest in GCET till fifteen days.
Other who were present Sanjay Sharma, Ankur Gupta, Nitin Gupta, Ankur Bali, Yogesh Talwar, Mohd. Arif, Rahul Ghai, Rifaqat Ijaz, Himanshu, Sumit Gupta .
