Youth Congress celebrates 219th birth anniversary of Maharaja Gulab Singh
10/21/2010 9:54:38 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Oct 21: 219th birthday of Maharaja Gulab Singh, founder of this vast state, was a virtual red letter day for Pradesh Youth Congress led by R. S. Pathania, senior vice-president, J & K P.Y.C. The activists of Youth Congress assembled at SMGS. hospital today morning where garlands were offered on the statue of the late
Maharaja.
Thereafter, Youth Congress activists distributed sweets among the patients, their attendants and other passer-byes. Renting of slogans, “Maharaja Gulab Singh Amar Rahe’ ‘Duggar dharti zindabad’ and ‘Youth Congress zindabad’ charged the atmosphere with a catharsis of glee and emotion. The function was marked by a scintillating and thought-provoking address, delivered in characteristic Dogri accent, by R.S. Pathania before the Youth Congress activists and the people having assembled over there wherein
he dwelled in detail upon the various facets of the adventurous, eventful and significant life of Maharaja. “From the Battle of Gumat to coronation at Jia Bota, Akhnoor, Intrigue
at Lahore, Treaty of Amritsar and conquest of Gilgit, Baltistan, Skardu, Suru Valley, Tibet and Multan, Maharaja’s tenure as first ruler of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh is a saga of dare-devilness, diplomacy, statesmanship, political steadfastness and pragmatism. It is a source of inspiration as to how with meagre resources and frugal
means, Maharaja had created a vast territory. But the biggest pity is that a major portion of territory conquered by Maharaja is under the Chinese and Pakistani occupation,” Pathania divulged in his address.
Dr. Aniece Chowdhary, principal, Govt. Medical College, Jammu and Dr. Dara Singh, Dy. Supdt., S.M.G.S. Hospital, were also present on the occasion and garlanded the statue.
They also complimented the efforts and endeavours of Youth Congress in remembering the great son of the soil on his birthday.
