| Hundred years of Satyagraha, Buddha anniversary celebrated | | |
JAMMU OCT 30 To mark the historic occasion of 2550th anniversary of Mahaparinirvana of Lord Buddha and completion of 100 years of Satyagraha, Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Smriti (GSDS) New Delhi in association with Gandian Centre for Peace and Conflict Solution, Jammu and Gandhi Studies Centre MAM College Jammu organized a function here today at Abhinav Theatre. In the function a play namely ‘Samrat, the last war of Asoka’, directed by Bhanu Bharti, was staged. Savita Singh, Director, GSDS was the chief guest on the occasion. The play started with the lightening of ceremonial lamp by Savita Singh. While addressing the congregation she stressed upon the relevance of Gandian thoughts in the contemporary world. She said that the year 2006 marks the 2555th anniversary of Mahaparnirvana of Lord Buddha and the centenary of birth of Satyagraha, to commemorate this historic occasion GSDS has planned a series of programmes in Delhi and other parts of the country and the play is part of the series. Dr. BB Anand, Director, Gandhi Study Centre MAM College Jammu said that like Asoka the great Gandhi was also deeply influenced by the teachings of Buddha which endeavors to see God in the service of humanity. He further said that in the contemporary world darkened with intolerance, greed and hatred, the life and teachings of Lord Buddha and Mahatma Gandhi are the only ray of hope. Bhanu Bharti, one of the most eminent Indian Theatre Directors, while speaking retaliated that they have also tried to convey the message of nonviolence and love. Samrat, the last war of Asoka has been written by K.Jayakumar. The participants of the play were, Bhanu Bharti, Sindu Mishra, Charul Laul, Venita Rai, Shyam Kishore, Alok Nair, Ravi Nager, Swadesh Bandhu, and Rajesh Bakshi etc.
