HR activist 'raped' a Rajouri woman

RAJOURI, Oct 21: Committing a heinous crime, a human rights activist and spiritual leader has been arrested by Rajouri police for allegedly raping women in Khandli area of border district Rajouri.
As per reports, Rajouri police has arrested Sofi Mohammad Fazal, a human rights activists and former District President of J&K Human Rights Watch- a Non Governmental organization working for human rights.
Sources said that Sofi was also known as revered spiritual leader in the district and thousands of people were visiting him for spiritual treatment. His arrest in rape case has created panic among the people of the area who were considering him as spiritual guru.
As per reports, Sofi was visited by a married women Sharifa Begum (name changed) a resident of Kandi area of Budhal at his residence in Khandli locality of Rajouri. Sharifa had visited him for getting some "Taweez" (Spiritual prescription on paper). "When she entered the house, Sofi advise her to come in another room and wait but after some time he forcibly torn her clothes and rape her", sources alleged.
Sources said that following rapping the woman, he reportedly threaten woman not to disclose anything outside. "He threaten me not to disclose anything outside", victim has reportedly stated before police.
Bypassing the threatening call of Sofi, the Woman reportedly approached Rajouri police and lodged report in the police station following which a team was sent to the House of Sofi where they arrested him.
Police has lodged First Information Report bearing number 382 under section 376 of Ranbir Panel Code and started investigation. However the incident has surprised many followers of the Sofi. "This is a shameful act committed by a religious man", a resident and follower of him, Murtaza Khan said.
Another resident of the village said that following this episode, people have started loosing faith on the religious leaders. "Although there are also good people, but we are loosing faith on spiritual leaders", a resident said.
On the other hand, the odious crime committed by a Human Rights activist has also created panic among the people. "These people are not HR activists but they are themselves violating Human rights and for this they must be punished with iron hands", residents said.
When contacted, Mohammad Shabir Choudhary, Additional Superintendent of Police Rajouri admitted that they have arrested Sofi in connection with rape case and they are investigating the matter.
