Farmers wailing over extensive damage to paddy crop
Heavy rain, hailstorm in Kathua
10/22/2010 11:19:02 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
KATHUA, Oct 22: Heavy overnight rain badly hit the paddy crop in district Kathua at a time when the crop was ready to harvest and thousands of the farmers were ready to reap the crop for selling it in the market.
This loss comes at a time when farmers are already suffering heavy losses since the price of paddy crop has gone down. Moreover, the prices are regulated by private players who are plundering farmers produce at cheap rates. Farmers allege that government has no concrete and comprehensive policy to procure crop and provide the appropriate rates due to which farmers have become victims of poverty and starvation.
Convener of Kissan Movement Hurmat Singh along with Randeep Singh Gathi said that Kathua is hub of farmers since more than 80 percent population is dependent on farming. He added that land is very fertile and effective for farming but the condition of both farmers and their agriculture land is gradually declining.
He added that it is happening due to the fact that government is negligent, corrupt and has seemingly no knowledge of the importance of agriculture in society. He maintained that government has been using chemicals to get high yield at the behest of private capitalists who introduced this technology with single motive of looting wealth of the farmers.
Karan Singh of Kokhyal Gayatri Singh Sat Paul Saini, Daya Ram, Ashwani Sharma, and Ram Raj Sharma of Kathua said that the sudden heavy rain damaged the standing and harvested crop of paddy.
