Roy delivers lecture on Sanskrit textual traditions | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 22: Third lecture under the banner of Jammu university lecture series in social sciences was delivered by Prof. Kumkum Roy who teaches history at centre for historical Studies of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) New Delhi. Title of her lecture was “Engaging with Power: Engendering Sanskrit Textual Traditions.” Lecture started with opening remarks by head of the Department of History, Jammu University Prof. Suman Jamwal. Welcoming the audience, Prof. Jamwal pointed out necessity of retrieving and relocating image of women in history. She also highlighted possibilities of recovering histories of gender and the potentialities of such studies in enriching our understanding of early India. Prof. Kumkum Roy began her lecture by draw attention to the way the concept of gender has evolved in recent decades. She then proceeded to examine range of extremely diverse textual traditions within Sanskrit. Citing example of several recent works on gender issue, she demonstrated how various texts have been used by them learning to the formulation of new sets of questions. She highlighted distinct strategies embedded in Sanskrit texts through which identities of men and women were constituted. She went on to elaborate gendered analysis of institutions and processes. Ranging from household to urbanism to renunciatory traditions to show how they remain critical for understanding of early Indian history. Director, Distance and continuing Education Prof. Poonam Dhawan who also holds the position of director Distance Education, presided over the lecture. In her presidential remarks she endorsed the points made by Prof. Roy and emphasized the need for taking such study in the context of Jammu and Kashmir. Vote of thanks was offered by Dr. Madhulika Singh. Dr. Shyam Narayan Lal has been coordinating the lecture series.
